Body Image in Early Adolescence: The Role of Self-Esteem Among Female Students

Abstract

Adolescent girls are increasingly exposed to appearance-based social comparison, which may influence their body image. However, research involving junior high school girls remains limited. This study aimed to describe self-esteem and body image and examine the relationship between the two variables among female junior high school students. A quantitative correlational design with total sampling was used, involving 110 female students. Data were collected using validated and reliable self-esteem and body image scales and analyzed using descriptive statistics, prerequisite tests, and Pearson’s product-moment correlation. The results showed that most students had high self-esteem (66.4%) and low body image (68.2%). A significant negative correlation was found between self-esteem and body image (r = −0.602, p < .001). These findings emphasize the importance of guidance and counseling services in strengthening self-esteem and promoting a healthier body image among girls in early adolescence.
